Moving your store to Shopify: what to plan for

A migration goes wrong when data, URLs or features get left behind. Plan for these three and the move is safe.

01

What to move, and what to leave

Make a list before anything moves:

  • Products, variants, images and collections
  • Customer accounts and order history
  • Blog posts and content pages that bring in traffic
  • Discount codes and gift cards still in use
02

Protecting your rankings

Shopify uses its own URL structure, so most addresses change in a move. Map every old URL to its new one and set up redirects before launch. Carry over page titles and descriptions, then submit the new sitemap in Google Search Console.

03

Rebuilding features on Shopify

Features your old platform handled may need a Shopify app or custom code. List them early, like quote requests, live pricing or local pickup, so nothing is missing on launch day.

04

Notes for each platform

Every platform exports data differently, so each move needs its own plan:

  • WooCommerce and WordPress to Shopify: products, customers and orders move, and blog posts can go to the Shopify blog. Plugin features need a Shopify app or custom code.
  • Magento to Shopify: Magento 2 stores often have large catalogs, custom attributes and tiered pricing. We map each attribute to Shopify variants, metafields or tags before anything moves.
  • BigCommerce to Shopify: the catalog structure is close to Shopify's, so products and categories map cleanly. Custom fields and price lists need checking.
  • Wix to Shopify: products export to a CSV file, but pages and blog posts usually need moving by hand. Somme Home and Sovereign House both moved to us from Wix.
  • Squarespace to Shopify: products export to CSV, and pages are rebuilt on Shopify with a redirect from each old address.

Shopify migration checklist for launch day

Before you switch the domain over:

  • Product, customer and order counts match the old store
  • Every old URL redirects to its new Shopify address
  • Payments, shipping and taxes pass a live test order
  • The domain is connected and the new sitemap is submitted in Google Search Console
  • Someone checks Search Console for 404 errors in the first few weeks

Shopify migration questions

Something else on your mind? Ask us on a free 15-minute call.

Which platforms can you migrate from?

WooCommerce, Wix, Squarespace, BigCommerce and Magento. If you are on another platform, ask on a free call and we will tell you what can move.

Will I lose my Google rankings when I move to Shopify?

We redirect every old URL to its new Shopify address and carry over page titles and descriptions, so your rankings move with the store.

What data moves to Shopify?

Products, variants, images, collections, customers and order history. We check the moved data against your old store before launch.

Will my store go offline during the migration?

No. Your old store keeps selling while we build on Shopify. We switch your domain over only when the new store is ready and tested.

Can customers keep their passwords after the move?

No. The old platform stores passwords encrypted, so no one can copy them to Shopify. Customer accounts and order history do move, and we can send each customer an invite to set a new password.

How long does a Shopify migration take?

It depends on the size of your catalog and the features to rebuild. You get a fixed launch date in the quote before we start.

How much does a Shopify migration cost?

Every migration gets a fixed quote after a free 15-minute call, based on your catalog, data and features. No hourly billing.
